History of Omega
As a well-known leader in the watch industry, Omega watches are known to hold their value throughout the years. Founded by Louis Brandt in the mid-1800s, the watch brand was initially called La Generale Watch Co. During this time, Brandt was releasing quality key-would pocket watches that were highly recognized for their precision.
As Omega watches grew in popularity, Brandt and his sons, Cesar and Louis-Paul, worked on the timepiece’s transposable parts improving the brand’s production control system. The three were able to not only reduce the amount of time it took to manufacture these timepieces, but also grow their collection.
In 1879, Brandt passed away and his business was taken over by his two sons. Keeping the brand’s reputation alive was of the essence and in 1892 their collaboration with Audemars Piguet did just that. Introducing the world’s first-ever minute-repeating wristwatch. This timepiece can now be found in Omega’s Museum over in Switzerland.
When Cesar and Louis-Paul passed away in 1903, the brand was taken over by Paul-Emile Brandt who memorialized them by rebranding themselves as ‘Luis Brant et Frere – Omega Watch & Co.’ to honor their contributions to the brand’s innovation. The brand was striving with over 800 employees crafting over 240,000 watches a year.
By 1905, Omega was crowned the official timekeepers for sporting events such as the Gordon Bennett Cup and soon for the Olympic games. It wasn’t until 1982 that the company shortened the name to just Omega SA, but the whole world already knew who they were.
Most Successful Omega Watch Models
All of Omega’s timepieces have made an impact in the luxury watch industry. Through their groundbreaking innovations and intriguing features and designs, Omega was able to make watches that appeal to all consumers. Omega’s watch models have each been designed to represent the brand’s reputation for excellent timekeeping and excellent performance even under the most extreme conditions.
As expected, some models excelled more than others in the luxury watch market Omega. While all Omega watches have had their fair share of successes, here are some of the most desirable Omega watch models to date:
- Seamaster Aqua Terra: This model excelled due to its durability and precision. The timepiece features a shock resistant coaxial movement which is perfect for those who carry active lifestyles. Despite being a heavy-duty watch, this versatile timepiece is often compared to the Rolex Datejust for its candidacy of being an everyday watch. While many enhanced versions of this model include several other complications, the Aqua Terra is recognized as a classic watch that can be dressed up by simply swapping out the leather band for a metal bracelet.
- Planet Ocean: For those who work in the ocean or are simply ocean fanatics, the Omega Planet Ocean is the perfect match. This water features a water resistance of up to 600 meters with a built in helium escape valve (HEV) at the 10 o’clock.
What’s unique about the HEV is that it releases helium pressure that gets built up in the watch as it descends lower and lower below sea level, which prevents the crystal from popping off. This watch also features a chronometer certification, analog display with luminescent hands, a unidirectional rotating bezel, and a screw-in caseback.
- Constellation: The Omega Constellation is a model Omega has been renovating and releasing since 1952. While many modernized versions of this watch have been released, majority share the same features such as a rounded case, star on the dial, and an 18k or two tone case/bracelet.
Over 25 versions of the Omega Constellation have been released and can now be found in several sizes for him or her. This dress watch is the perfect staple piece to any outfit. Whether watching a tennis match or attending the Met Gala, this Omega is made for it all!
